After sharing that his anticipated sophomore effort would arrive in April, Khalid made it official on Thursday (Feb. 28), announcing that Free Spirit would be released April 5. He also shared the album’s artwork, which features the “Better” singer standing atop a van in the middle of a deserted road.
“Free Spirit the album Drops on April 5th Make sure to pre-order on March 7th,” he tweeted shortly after noon ET. Earlier in the month, Khalid kicked off the project’s rollout with the release of the Disclosure-assisted “Talk,” which sits at No. 50 as one of his four records currently on the Billboard Hot 100.
“This album is the culmination of all of the growth and experiences I have gathered over the past two remarkable years,” he told Beats 1 of what to expect from his upcoming LP. “I have been in the studio pouring my soul and spirit to create a body of work that I hope speaks to each and every one of you.”
The album will also be pre-dated by a short Free Spirit short film, which is directed by Emil Nava. The flick is scheduled to hit theaters for 24 hours only on April 3. “I’m no actor, but honestly, shooting for Free Spirit was so much fun and stepping out of my comfort zone inspired me A LOT. I’m so anxious and excited it’s killing me,” Khalid wrote to Instagram.
